Would it do what you're looking for if you turn on snapping and snap nodes to paths and have the appropriate sensitivity set (in options)?
Interesting idea - I've tried it out (with both "Snap nodes to objects", "Snap to object paths" and "Always snap" enabled) but (suprisingly) I still find it very difficult to pin new nodes exactly on the intersection point...
