Btw, regarding, an appropriate bitmap editor, I recently
stumbled upon "Pixel", a Photoshop-like bitmap editor,
which is available for a number of OSes (like Linux).

"Pixel" is currently available as v 1, part of which still seems
a bit buggy (like "Unsharp Mask..."; for more see the online
forum). "Pixel" is a commercial app, although extremely in-
expensive (USD 38.-; later USD 100.-). The interface is practically
identical with Photoshop. A demo can be downloaded for free.
