Why does inkscape build a font cache? Why can't it just rely on the existing fontconfig cache? Or is it using yet another font mechanism that is going to give me nightmares?
It relies on fontconfig cache (no nightmares) but it rebuilds it the first time it starts. Users were complaining about missing fonts a lot and rebuilding the cache usually improves things so we did that. It's only on the first start so that's not very annoying. Gimp does the same by the way. We used to have a message that said what Inkscape was doing but it is gone apparently.
