Corel Draw (starting from version 10 if I remember well) can do the job, and it can export to SVG or PDF (Inkscape 0.46 devel builds have a very nice and robust PDF importer)
Unfortunately I don't know of a freeware or opensource alternative that can handle AI v.8 files...

(Sorry for the duplicate post -- first msg was sent before I was subscribed)
I have some files in Illustrator's AI format (from Illustrator version 8 I believe). According to the Inkscape wiki, only AI version 9 or later can be opened by Inkscape.
Does anyone know of a conversion tool that can open my v8 AI files and convert them into a format that Inkscape can open?
Thanks, Michael
