If you are not using Inkscape layers to organise content, then the work flow might be this: Select one of the paths from inside a group element. Hold down the shift key, and draw new path to create a sub-path. Then break apart. Does not work with the Calligraphy tool.

If you are working with layers (recommended) then everything you draw is by default placed in an SVG g (group) element. You can easily move a selected path to another (layer) group using layer menu options. This works with all objects, not just paths.

You can can also use Inkscape's xml editor (or other external text editor) to organise path elements.

Use Shift at which time?

Do you mean e.g. by holding down the shift modifier key?

Thanks Maren.

Ok yeah, that's much better. But newly drawn objects are always on top. If
you're going to add a new path to anything, it's going to be on top.

As an "ordinary" or non-technical Inkscape user, it totally doesn't make
sense that you have to move the path to the bottom, to avoid breaking up the
group.

Does anyone know a faster way to add a path to a group, besides having
groups of groups of groups? Is there any way to draw a new path where it
gets automatically added to the bottom?

I know I could cut, enter the group, and paste in place. But combine is so
much faster. But move to the bottom and then combine isn't much faster.

Thanks again,
brynn
