Hi,
There must be something very special about your png file, cos' it crashes my rev21271 Inkscape build every time I try to import it (windows XP). I can import other pngs just fine.
Anyway, to answer your question:
If you already have clean land shapes as you should after following the tutorial:
This is the problem here, I don't seem to be able to get the clean land shapes correctly.
Here is the procedure, I am using:
1) New file 2) Import (africa.png) 3) Call up the Trace (SHIFT-ALT-B) 4) Choose brightness cutoff (0.980) 5) Select the 'Inverse' 6) Update 7) I then added a circle 8) Exported bitmap 9) Open Gimp 10) Removed the outer layer
Is there a quicker way to do this, and also at the same time get a better outline of the countries/ islands etc...
I have attached the original png file together with the updated .svg file with all the layers.
create a new layer (below the current where the shapes are)
go back to the current layer
duplicate the shapes (which, I suppose, are paths or "empty" countries
go back to the current layer
Edit / duplicate the shape you want (the duplicated one is then selected)
Layer : move selection to layer below (the one you just created)
Go in the Object / fill and stroke menu. Suppress the stroke (the original shape), add a fill.
Done.
Now if you make the new layer invisible, you have your lands shapes as empty as before.
N.B. : You could also use a sub-layer of the "current" one instead of a new separate layer, but then if you make the current invisible, the invisibility also applies to the subs-, it's a bit more difficult to handle.
Regards.

From: Norman Khine <norman@...2639...> Subject: [Inkscape-user] fill areas advice To: inkscape-user@lists.sourceforge.net Date: Sunday, May 17, 2009, 5:37 PM Hello, I tried to follow the tracing example at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ATracingExample.html but have difficulties in manipulating my image to what I want. Basically I have three globes (file attached), I have traced the areas, but now I would like to fill the land parts with the colors red, green and blue one for each globe and for this fill to be in a new layer. Can someone please advise on how to achieve this. Many thanks Norman
