I have a vector file that was originally made in Illustrator. I downloaded it as a zip file. When I unzipped it the file had an .eps suffix.
GV can view it.
Converted to pdf acrobat reader can view it.
Inkscape only gets a black background.
Is there a way to manipulate this image in inkscape?
Here is where I retrieved it.

... I could view in evince (linux document viewer), but like you, it only came up black in Inkscape: $ apt-cache policy inkscape inkscape: Installed: 0.48.0-1ubuntu1.1 Candidate: 0.48.0-1ubuntu1.1 Version table: *** 0.48.0-1ubuntu1.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-proposed/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.48.0-1ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages
and scribus. I finally opened in OpenOffice.org (Draw) where it viewed just fine. I then exported as an svg & that version opens properly in Inkscape. No clue why... but you might give that a try.
