When I opened Inkscape, it launched with X11. However the screen that I see is only a gray screen with the Inkscape window (pls see attached picture). I cannot see my desktop nor other applications. Is it normal? I want to have Inkscape working with other application without the necessary quitting Inkscape. Please help.

Check the preferences under X11
On mine, I can switch to the "Output" tab and then see a choice for "Enable the Enter Full Screen menu"
That mentions Command-option-A to leave full screen mode.
