ScislaC, what do you think of this? Would this fit in with the DeviantArt community too?
Also, does anyone have ideas on how this could be organized?
(catching up on 3 days of the lists, sorry if this is talked about again and I haven't seen it yet)
I'm pretty sure that the dA inkscapers community would love to have regular monthly contests for logos, icons, etc for various projects. So far they loved the couple contests for Inkscape related stuff, so that's why I think it would go over well (that and a decent proportion of the 'inkscapers' members are using other FOSS as well and they like to contribute, but can't in the traditional development sense).
Organization-wise I think we'd have to go from the top down and throw it out there in the OSS world first and see how much of a desire there is to have this "service" available. There's a bazillion OSS projects at completely different stages of development so I'd personally assume that there is a pretty strong need. The real question is how to tap that side to see how large of a need there truly is. Anyone have any ideas on that?
Well, like I mentioned earlier, I probably get 2-3 logo creation requests from OSS folks every month. Plus, I've seen more than a few pleas from various OSS projects posted on websites, etc. out there. I think there is an extremely strong desire for this sort of service.
To take a slightly different look at this same problem I think it might be worth investigating tools which allow the easy creation of buttons, bevel, shield, flags/banners and other more complicated shapes which people might use as part of the task for logo creation.
Perhaps someone would consider making custom extensions to help with this kind of thing or add specials tool to make it easy to draw more unusual shapes? (I have a feeling I'm not describing this very well.)
