I have *always* seen the term "palette" used to describe the *mechanism* that allows you to choose which color to use (i.e., click on this box on the color palette).

And if you view the attached pic you will see that in at least Adobe Illustrator 10 it is called swatches.

Also, go to http://macromedia.com/software/freehand/productinfo/features/static_tour /win_xp_full.html and view the left tab on the bottom right corner, which shows that Macromedia also calls it swatches.

So your *always* seems like it may be limited to the non industry standard software.
