ubuntu is very inkscape friendly.  it does not come preinstalled, but it is in the package list for installation.  version 6.06.1 lts has inkscape 4.3.

I have a Slackware Linux system, at this point release 11.  Slackware does not
include Gnome.  when I attempt to compile Inkscape I get a long list of
missing packages. When I attempt to install the precompiled version using:

inkscape-0.44.1.x86.WONKY.package

things get even worse.  Fontconf gets messed up and I have to reinstall
Slackware 11 from scratch to straighten things out.

Which distro of Linux is Inkscape friendly? I can set it up on a separate
partition.
