I noticed that a font with a name that is composed of a word, a space and an arabic numeral cannot be used by Inkscape. When I changed the names of these fonts to have the numeral written out (e.g. - from Tombats 7 to Tombats Seven) or to have the numeral connected to the word with a hyphen (e.g. - from Tombats 7 to Tombats-7) the very same font works fine. Unfortunately, I had to use a time-limited sharware app to change the font's name, but there it is.
I guess it's a bug, isn't it?

Some fonts simply don't work in Inkscape. For example, "Modern No. 20" is rendered as Arial. It's a TrueType font and otherwise unexceptionable.
Report this as a bug, including a pointer to where the font can be obtained. Font support for Inkscape has improved but is still not 100% perfect
Done. (Twice, unfortunately.) Bug #1190750
Are you using Freetype on Windows to render fonts?
