It sounds like it _might_ be a mimetype problem. Have a look at this website which has a tool to check the mimetype you're sending for your SVG file, and instructions on how to add it to your server if it's missing:

First, thanks for your help. I put the .htaccess file in the same remote directory as the file drawing.svg and it still won't play. I checked it out using http://planetsvg.com/tools/mime.php and my file passed inspection.
Now it displays properly. But the link in it won't work. I get a fancy 401 page from my host, Doteasy.com.
The link works fine on my own computer in firefox. So it is not the browser. I have a query in to doteasy.com
In the meantime, are there web hosts who are svg-friendly? Any recommendations?
