It reminds me of the Enveloppe effect of Corel Draw.
That'd be great to have t in Inkscape!
Similarily, you modified the box around the object.. You could also add or remove nodes on the wrapper.

Yes, that is very similar to the lattice idea, although his "wrapper" has control handles
and a lattice doesn't (at least as implemented in Blender, anyway)
