Yes, "Esc" key does the trick. Thanks - that's not *that* bad, and I suspect I'll get used to it pretty quickly.

It's focus. You need to click the main window (the canvas) -- click the title bar or someplace neutral on the toolbar so you don't lose your selection.
It is indeed the focus; if you notice blur value was changing because keyboard focus is still on the slider control. You can press the Escape key to get back to the main drawing window, I find this easier than using the mouse.
