In this way, you don't have to reposition the node. But the problem with this approach is that I would like to have the handles for the rounded corner in the exact right place - something I can't manage "on the eye" or "by hand", if you get what I mean...

I've noticed the same issue with the inset and outset functions in
inkscape.  Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer for you.

I might have a more elegant answer for your previous question though.

1. Select the node tool and add an additional node on either side of the
corner you want to smooth.
2. Select the two "new" segments.
3. Use the make selected segments curves options.
4. Delete the node at the corner.
5. Tweek as appropriate.

I'm not quite sure if this is what you're looking for, but it does work well
for some applications.
