Oh dear..... I must be doing something very wrong, I tried every method mentioned and the results are the same, I can get a print-out of either 11 or 14 inches then the printing stops as though the print job was completed. I just can't get passed the 11 or 14 inch thing.
Even using Acrobat Reader, on the Reader print set-up screen, the whole document is shown up to 11 or 14 inches. The print out is then exactly what is shown on that screen. A couple of times I did get the whole 24 inches of the document on the printer set-up page but only 11 or 14 inches was active, the rest of the 13 or 10 inches (of the document) was darkened out indicating that it would not print (it didn't).
It has to be something simple, I can get banner print-outs using other applications.
I'm using the latest version of all applications.
Thank you so much for your help and patience.

Hello Jon,
I don't believe there are any problems at all printing from inkscape indirectly via the Gimp (as I do) or via pdf (as Davi does) to any custom page size, so it's a little difficult for me to understand what you want changed in Inkscape as it prints banners very well albeit indirectly via gimp/pdf: i'm afraid i am missing the point somewhere as to what you want. apologies.

Thank you, Davi, for your response to this question. As time allows, I will try out your suggestions and report on my findings.
I've been checking out some of the commercial page lay-out & publishing apps available. For the classroom, Print Master (I have an old version,12) has a very easy to use and print banner component. It sets the banner length as you type so, you start out with one page and as you type the banner lengthens. This is very cool but is rather limited in the document design area. I'm thinking about checking out some of the Serif products. There support staff assures me that there are no problems printing banners to different lengths. And, the applications offer my students powerful (as far as I can tell)design components so that they can draw, etc. as much as they want. I include these thoughts in the hopes that Inkscape incorporates some or all of these features.
Again, thank you for your help in this.

Hi all,
I do not use Inkscape to print, but Adobe Acrobat (since you do not
want
tiling, the Reader version should be fine). The steps that I follow are (roughly):
- Download the latest Windows version (inkscape-LATEST.zip);
- Run it, select/make the appropriate page size, draw;
- Save as "PDF" and save as "Cairo PDF" and compare both PDFs (in
particular if you have transparencies); 4) If I am using a "fancy" page-size that I created. I make sure I have that page size available in Windows. In case you must create one the steps are: Go to "StartPrinters and Faxes" Go to "FileServer Properties" Under the "Forms" tab I create the appropriate form (i.e. page size)
and
save it with a nice name. 5) Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and print it. But note that:
- You must check under the document properties (Ctrl+D) that the page
size is correct.
- Remember to select the appropriate paper size for the pirnter (inside
"FilePrint..." then "Properties" and in "Advanced...");
- Selecting Adobe to rescale or not should not provide different
results, but these can happen. So it is worth testing.
I am able to print huge and/or custom works this way without problems
in
many different printers.
Wild wild guess: if everything else fails, try printing an exported bitmap with a resolution of 600 dpi or less.
