Jordan,

Inkscape is very different from paint in that paint is a raster drawing program and inkscape is a vector drawing program.  This means in paint you edit individual pixels where as inkscape objects and paths that can be edited.

A paint program is more analogous to actually drawing on a piece of paper.  Dealing with vectors can take a little time before you get the hang of it.

I suggest you go through Tav's guidebook on line at:

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

You should find the quick start section particularly useful.

You should join the mailing list for the project:
http://openclipart.org/discussion

And/or join the http://inkscape.org mailing list inkscape-users to
discuss these things.
