Gimp renders the svg, when it's imported. You can't save it as svg anymore.

Yeah, I assumed that much. It's too bad really.
That's what inkscape is for, actually. I've suggested (long ago) to the gegl people that they include ways of rendering SVG, since there seemed to be a possibility that their framework could be made to accomodating it, but they seemed to think they had enough on their plate already to consider proposals out of left field.
