[Inkscape-user] Making a poster with Inkscape

Hello everyone, This question would and should fall under the "very general" category: I have been using Inkscape for a while - but only to make small and simple graphics (I am a PhD student and I need to create figures every now and then). I now am faced with the daunting task of creating a poster. I have never done this before. Does anyone have any tips on how to make a powerful, yet beautiful and simple poster using Inkscape? In particular, if you have made a poster using Inkscape before, could you share your experiences with me? Any input would be helpful given that I know nothing about graphic design. I apologise in advance to those of you to whom this email doesn't apply. Thanks!
