I'm not an ps expert, but I will subscribe to the devel list, and see what can I do.
But beware! If I rush into the devel list, you'll get a big pressure to implement missing, but very necessary features. ;)

It seems to me, inkscape print to ps doesnot handle transparency and gradients.
Can I make it work?
Sure! I think to get transparency to work properly you're going to have to use Postscript Level 3 -- which, to my understanding, is the first version to support alpha.
The thought in the back of my head for doing this would be to steal the Postscript/PDF engine from Scribus and plug it in to Inkscape. It would be really cool if you did this.
If you have questions about where to put stuff or what you can do feel free to ask.

PS - I cc'd the devel list because this discussion should probably be moved there.
