This sounds like a good feature to put in a feature request ticket for (Go to the inkscape.org homepage and click on 'RFE'.) If you know how to program, this might be a very good feature to get involved in developing.
And partial kde-integration (file dialogs)? Gtk file-dialogs are terrible.
We actually had kde file dialogs originally but took them out. While it's definitely agreed that the kde file dialogs are superior, we felt that keeping the codebase pure Gtk would make maintenance more straightforward. Instead, we've been keeping an eye on the progress in improving the Gtk dialogs, and hope that they'll become available soon. Meanwhile, we're working on improving Inkscape's own file handling system.
