I use the Inkscape 0.46, built April 1 2008 on Windows XP SP2. Now I reinstalled it from http://inkscape.org, but it's still the same version. Where could you find the May 8 version?
I still have the same problem, and as I see, Paul also has it. If I look at the PDF Paul sent I can see the same coarse circles and letters in several pdf viewers.
I uncompressed and opened the PDF Paul sent in a text editor. The PDF contains both curves and lines. ie the curves had not been converted to lines. All the original information that is in the SVG file is in the PDF. This is a problem with the viewer problem.
The viewer will flatten the curves to lots of little lines when rendering. Normally the curves are flattened to lines of no more than one pixel in length so the flattening will not be visible on the display. In your screen shot it looks the curve flattening has been done once at the original size and the same lines have been used when zooming in.
The PDF displays fine in Adobe Reader and evince. I zoomed in on the circles in both viewers and there was no visible flattening.
