Not sure if this is exactly what you're after, but give this a shot...
 
Activate the node selector tool. There should be a button at the far end of the toolbar that says show node handles or something similar when you mouse over it.  Select it and you should see the handles for the active object.

I found that you can hold shift and change the shape of the lines, or
just grab the lines themselves and strech them like rubber bands,
similar to the way they behave in Flash (but not the same).

Sometimes though, I would really like to see those handles, so I don't
have to guess where they are, and can really fine tune my curves.
