I don't know a lot about it, but I believe IE only supports transparency in baseline PNGs (ie PNGs that have the same basic properties as GIFs, 256 color pallet, etc). A white rectangle will to the trick but I think it is more difficult to work with than removing transparency from the export background color in the preferences. In the document preferences dialog (Shift+Ctrl+D) on the "Page" tab, the very first control is labeled "Background". Click the button and adjust the alpha slider up to full opacity.
