If you use the calligraphic tool, then no, you can't easily fill its interior, because its interior is actually the wide stroke itself. So you need to create a new object to "fill" it. But you can use the freehand or bezier tools instead, they create simple paths whose fill will apply to the interior.
Yes, I understand. I wonder if other vector programs have such a feature. Do you think it is possible at all to be implemented in inkscape? This would be extremely helpful.
