I think a mascot is generally a bad idea. If every application I used regularly decided to create a mascot it would drive me insane. I don't want my computer filled with cute cheerful winking and blinking things on every flipping splash screen for every application on my laptop, pc, whatever.
Not that my opinion is going to make any difference... but ack!
