I'm using a freshly installed copy of Ubuntu 10.10, with Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654.
I can file a bug report if it's warranted.
seems to be a cairo-related issue:
reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r9894, using cairo 1.10 not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r9894, using cairo 1.8.10
(tested on OS X 10.5.8)
Seems to only affect special cases (left or right vertical edge of an open U-shaped path). IMHO a bug in cairo 1.10.
