Save as "Cairo PS" preserves the pattern fills (in current
development version of Inkscape at least, I am not sure Cario PS is
available in 0.45).
An other work around is to make a bitmap copy of your object (alt+B)
and trace it (Path > Trace bitmap). It's tedious and not the best way
to do it but if your image is just black and white it should work
correctly (except for the fact that tracing bitmap seems to be broken
in development versions).
