I might want to try out the developer version. How stable would you say it is? I don't might trying out beta or even alpha quality software, but I would hate to loose all my work...

Blur Edge can be used as a workaround in some cases instead of real blur

There are some features to be finished before the next release (with
gaussian blur being one of them), I don't think anyone can give an exact
date.
You can compile yourself the latest version from Subversion and see
exactly where is it (or try a not very up to date packaged version from
the development branch: http://inkscape.org/download.php)
