Another way I could do it is by rendering the squares to a high resolution, then adding gradients via the gimp, and then importing the bitmap back.

Even if conical gradients aren't available for the moment, you can create very complex visuals.You can simulate a conical effect by exporting a conical gradient made in gimp and traced in inkscape. That's the only way i see.

Sorry that is not currently possible in Inkscape.
The SVG specification only includes Linear and Radial gradients at the moment and the same is true for Inkscape. There are plenty of requests for more gradients (please see the Request Tracker) and there has even been discussion about asking the writers of the SVG specification to include more gradient types (mentioned on the developer list last month I think).
