This didnt work with 0.44 i dont hink, but does with SVN...
Draw the path you want to use as a clip Clone it. use the clone to clip the group (so you get your paste inside type thing) edit the original and the cloned clippath will update too.
for added organisation, stick all the clip paths on a layer, turn it invisible when your done.

I would imagine you have to unset it. That was another thing (now you mention it) that Freehand could handle - you could do just that and the children would remain clipped, hiding or showing more or less as you moved the parent's outline about.
