If you only want to remove part of it, create an additional helper object to cut off that path via Path->Division, then Path->Break Apart and delete the part you don't need anymore. I hope this is more what you need.
After converting the object to path I would just double click to add nodes where I want the path cut and then use the "break path at selected nodes" button.
