I'm 99% sure it's not how it was derived either. When reading the history of dA, Jark had some, uh... pretty "interesting" domain names for other sites at the time... and deviantART is most definitely one of the most tame ones.
Programmers think they are funny and it is a clever wordplay (it is not).
I agree it's an awful name.
"Hi Mom, check out this piece I put up on DeviantArt!"
"...DeviantArt?"
And I'd hope she would check it out (my mom does), since you recently upped a couple nice pieces. At least it's not "iworshipsatanandheresmyart.com". ;)
In the end it basically carries around the same stigma as "The GIMP" does... but let's not go there. (I know how Alan feels about that one too)
