As to your request, it is possible by the Pattern Along Path extension (not path effect!) if you choose the Ribbon mode, see:

It would be great if we could also have this option in the Pattern Along Path LPE (and then we could probably get rid of the extension)...
I tried but wouldn't get the right result. Perhaps I hadn't the right settings?
