You're right. After reading this email, I tried this it with ubuntustudio theme which is even darker and it doesn't work as well either.
Anyway I will remove transparency from a few icons. Using overall transparenrency is not a good idea.

One way to make it work would be to draw a white shadow around them all (like the lock), but it would make them even smaller.
I tried Tango with a very dark theme. I thought it woud look better because it is lighter, but the same problem occurs.
