I haven't experimented with opacity in layers but I have sent pdfs with opacity gradients to printers without any problems. I used to convert to EPS (painful on windows) or phone the printers to try and explain how they could import svg into their software (painful and not always 100% successful) so the pdf export has made my dealings with printing companies a lot simpler! Since I started sending the exported pdfs I have not had one printer contact me with a problem - if it viewed ok in Adobe reader, the printers could use it.
Hope that helps a little,
Tony

I have a solid color background. Then a layer above that is a pattern of repeated logos. All are selected as a group. When I choose Fill and Stroke and change Opacity to less than 100% the final PDF doesn't show that layer anymore. (Even 99% does not work.)
Xpdf shows it drawn but then it is immediately replaced with the solid background.
In inkscape itself, it appears correctly.
When I change opacity back to 100% it works again. Any ideas how I can opacity be less than a 100%?
