I have scanned a picture that didn't come out very good. The part of the picture that I want is either black or very dark gray, but I got a really bad backgrund that consists of light grey and white. Is there any way for me to somehow extract out the dark part or remove the lighter parts? It is a complex picture so doing it by hand isn't an option.
I would recommend using "Layer->Colors->Levels" in the GIMP before bringing it into Inkscape. You'll have much better color control there.
