Thanks, John.  ....However I am a somewhat puzzled in that this has never occurred before --- either with .39 or .40; that is until I stumbled into a nest of Trojans and watched my computer struggle for its life.  I think that the machine is now clean  .40 loads OK, but still not .41. The work-around is clear enough, but I don't understand the "external apps" bit.  Are they missing from my machine or from the download?  The Gimp is running flawlessly as are all of my other graphic programs.

I guess it is watch and see time.  Thanks again.
