Hi Everyone... and the mystery continues. I am very encouraged that many of you are able to print custom sized documents. I am using an HP Deskjet 5650 printer. Do you think there might be a problem with that choice? I do have the latest driver installed.
Thank you for your patience with this problem that I am encountering!!
I do not use Inkscape to print, but Adobe Acrobat (since you do not want tiling, the Reader version should be fine). The steps that I follow are (roughly):
- Download the latest Windows version (inkscape-LATEST.zip);
- Run it, select/make the appropriate page size, draw;
- Save as "PDF" and save as "Cairo PDF" and compare both PDFs (in
I did the above steps. The only difference was saving as "Cairo PDF" since I couldn't seem to find it.
- If I am using a "fancy" page-size that I created. I make sure I have
that page size available in Windows. In case you must create one the steps are: Go to "Start\Printers and Faxes" Go to "File\Server Properties" Under the "Forms" tab I create the appropriate form (i.e. page size) and save it with a nice name.
I did the above steps. I created a 8.5 x 24 inch form and saved it.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and print it. But note that:
- You must check under the document properties (Ctrl+D) that the page
size is correct.
I opened the document in Adobe Reader 7 (I used the latest version). I checked the document properties and the page size is correct. The entire custom document size is correct.
- Remember to select the appropriate paper size for the pirnter (inside
"File\Print..." then "Properties" and in "Advanced...");
I set this to banner paper since that is the only setting I can find in the HP printer set-up box. I set it to landscape. The paper size that I set in step 4 does not show up as a paper choice. Should it?
When I click on print, the Print box opens. The Preview shows only 8.5 x 11 inches, NOT the entire 24 inches. If I click on "Choose Paper Source by PDF paper size", I get a 14 inch preview. 14 inches is the max. I have ever gotten. (HP assured me that the printer can print out longer then 14 in. documents).
Print range is ALL. With ALL selected, the first 11 inches of the document is highlighted (see above paragraph). If I click on any other selection (Current view or Pages), only the middle 11 inch section of the document is highlighted. Both ends are darkened.
When Page Scaling is set to NONE, the preview shows the entire document BUT only 11 inches in length are highlighted. The remaining 13 inches are darkened out. It is this darkened section that does not print. If I could only get that remaining 13 inches highlighted, I guess the entire thing will print (right assumption?).
- Selecting Adobe to rescale or not should not provide different
results, but these can happen. So it is worth testing.
I am able to print huge and/or custom works this way without problems in many different printers.
Can't wait until I can say the same thing!!!
Wild wild guess: if everything else fails, try printing an exported bitmap with a resolution of 600 dpi or less.
Going to try this next.....
Thank you EVERYONE!!!
