Yes. Now I can see the problem. Other text boxes display this diamond
but the one that I'm trying to modify doesn't.

How do I tell if it has been converted to something which is not text
and can I change it back?

i don't think you can do that right now... the thing is these two types of text are very different from a svg point of view. (you'll understand if you check out the xml).
the easiest thing is to recreate the text.
but in case you do find a way, please tell me ;)
