[Inkscape-user] PDF map -> intermediate format -> inkscape

I have a very detailed street map for a city in PDF (vector) format. The map is so detailed that most pdf viewers slow to a crawl when zooming in on areas.

I would like to import this map into inkscape to reduce some data features, cull some unnecessary labeling, and generally to change the coloring before I print it.

What data path, using free (linux) tools, would you suggest for the best conversion and import? I didn't see any EPS import features in the current inkscape CVS. Are there other vector formats that would be better suited? Thanks.
