A star may not differ visually from a polygon if its spoke ratio is set to a specific value (depending on the number of rays). In this case the only change upon clicking the star/polygon checkbox would be adding/removing the second handle on canvas. Do you see that second handle for star? If you do just drag it to turn it into a real star :)
