As I mentioned before, this is with 0.92pre3.
When you tested this after my first report, you confirmed that having the Pen in straight line mode (in 0.91) did cause 0.92pre2 to start with the Pen in bspline mode. I can't remember if you said you fixed it or not.
I think it is entirely possible that the change didn't take effect because I didn't close all instances of Inkscape when I made the change. I wonder if there would be any way to have the prefs file updated when any file is closed. Or maybe better, when any file is saved? Saved makes more sense to me, but as I said, I'm certainly not a programmer. Maybe that would be too much, if someone was using autosave?
Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll let you know if it does somehow switch back.

yes, well, having multiple instances of Inkscape running at the same time will certainly complicate matters. Inkscape will use only the most recently saved version of the prefs, which means the most recently closed instance of Inkscape. on the other hand, I just confirmed that if you delete or rename the preferences file in Inkscape and if you then restart Inkscape, it will start up in regular Bezier mode, not BSpline mode. This is as it should be. Are you by any chance running an older version of Inkscape, before the modes were re-defined?
