Thanks for the comment. I've found that the best way to avoid this problem is to convert fonts to outlines. If I don't, both Gimp and Firefox mess up the kerning. So, I keep two copies of the files: One I can edit and one I can't. Until these other applications are fixed that's what I'll do.
