I think what Joel is looking for is something similar to what one can achieve with bitmap editors and different layers, using layer modes. (That's at least my assumption.) I tried what you suggested, but not to much avail. I made two rectangles with different fills and converted them to paths, but after applying said effect, Inkscape computed a number of intermediate shapes--all in black (the fill color of the first shape). I checked 'Interpolate styles (experimental)'.
