None that I've ever heard of. I seem to recall hearing the GIMP has a way to wrap an image over a sphere. But I don't' really know for sure.
Open source 3D modeling -- try Blender. From a few examples I've seen, it seems like it should be possible in Blender.

In it he uses a 3d tool to bend a rectangle around a cylinder. I was wondering if Inkscape has a similar tool / extension?
