Direct print from Inkscape uses Postscript which is limited and obsolete.
I guess this answers the question I posted on the devel-list yesterday (about the printing bug). So if anyone has any direct-printing problems should he/she just use PDF as a workaround? Are there any plans for improving the printing functionality?
I have no idea. If you ask my personal opinion, then yes, I would recommend exporting either to PDF or to hi-res bitmap and printing that. That should be at least reliable.
As for direct print, as far as I know, it's still based on Postscript (at least on Linux - though I may well be wrong on this) and therefore will always be way behind the SVG, especially as we implement things like filters etc. So I'm not sure if it's really worth the effort to improve our PS-based print.
