There is no dpi in inkscape, as pictures are made of lines and shapes rather then pixels, but you can set the dpi when exporting to a png.

OK. but when a png or jpg image is imported it has a certain dpi. It is not AFAIK automatically converted to vector format. So if subsequently I shrink it does the DPI increase proportionately? Or does it always stay at 90dpi?
