Since 16x16 px icons are quite small I create a pixel grid and made the icons this exact same size. Of course if, for some reason, we change their size, they won't look as good anymore (but who wants to do that?!).

People with higher-resolution monitors, people with limited vision, people running different themes...

GNOME generally has a "Large Print" theme that can be used to check what things look like when the UI elements get bigger. That's one I used when fixing Inkscape's support for icon sizing properly to the current theme.
